There exists in America a “mentality of disposability”, a belief that some people don’t count. Tied to this attitude are the ideas of entitlement and privilege that keeps some people at the center of society while insulating them from others who have been displaced. The practice of collective indifference that renders certain people and groups invisible is called “Erasure”; manifested as greed and lust for resources is robbing many communities of their cultural heritage. Coast to Coast – from St. Louis to Chicago – Los Angeles to New York City – the historic neighborhoods that are cornerstones of the African-American community are being systematically erased—brick by brick— city block by city block – leaving behind scant evidence of their existence.
